In the heart of Dinas Powys, a War Memorial stands as a poignant tribute to the local heroes who had sacrificed so much. Over time, the memorial and its surroundings had weathered the elements, necessitating a careful and respectful restoration process.

First, the main War Memorial was meticulously cleaned, along with the bollards that surrounded it. Specialist poultices were applied to the copper-bronze elements to remove or reduce the verdigris staining, which had developed over the years. This delicate process aimed to restore the original luster of the bronze works as much as possible.

ABOVE: The various materials that make up the memorial benefitted from the DOFF cleaning, including the surrounding areas. The result speaks for itself.

Attention then turned to the copper-bronze plaques and laurel wreaths. These were carefully cleaned to remove any accumulated grime before being sealed with a specialist wax to protect them from future weathering. The metal chain-link surround was also repainted, restoring its original appearance and ensuring it complemented the newly cleaned memorial.

The paved areas around the memorial, including the pathways leading to and from it, received thorough cleaning.

BELOW: We encounter weathering and bird fouling to copper-bronze plaques regularly although our professional cleaning and treating methods restore them back to their best.

A structure was built around the monument with scaffolding to protect the pointing work. We naturally used a mortar with the closest possible match in colour and texture to the original.

The pathways, made up of random paving stones, had several areas where the pointing had failed. Approximately 30 linear meters of defective pointing were raked out and re-pointed. The same procedure was used for the surrounding paving slabs of the memorial area.

BELOW: Considering the type weather we usually experience in the British Isles, ensuring the mortar work was protected from the elements was essential.

Lastly, efforts were made to re-position and re-point the large end sections of the perimeter wall coping at all entrances. However, it was crucial that no cleaning or re-pointing occurred on any other sections of this coping, preserving their historical integrity.

Through these careful and respectful efforts, the Dinas Powys War Memorial was restored to its former glory, standing proud and dignified, continuing to honour the memory of those who had served and sacrificed for their community and country.

One last piece of conservation work was to a nearby plaque we fitted to commemorate the achievements of the Olympic sailor Hannah Mills.

Having competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics we were required to add some additional inscription which involved removing and re-pointing the plaque. It’s cherished by the community and so we wanted it to look its best for them.
